PENS TAKE FIRST ROAD WIN OF SEASON

The Penguins took to the road for the first time this season on Friday night, and put a damper on the Syracuse Crunch's opening night festivities with a 6-1win in New York.

The win raised the Pens' record to 2-1-0-0 on the young season, heading into a Saturday night home tilt against the undefeated Bridgeport Sound Tigers (2-0-0-0).

And while the offensive outburst was nice, it was the work of netminder Jeff Deslauriers that drew the most praise from head coach Todd Richards.

"He was great. I don’t know if you want to say he was the difference in the game, but he had a huge impact in the game," Richards stated. "There were times where, in a 1-1 game in the second period, he made a couple saves that were huge."

The Pens' power play was firing on all cylinders as well, finding the twine four times in nine chances.

"That’s the difference in games," Richards said. "When we get our power play chances, we need to make the most of it. Our power play was pretty good tonight, not having worked on it very much."

Ryan Stone opened the scoring with his first of the season with 3:20 left in the first period, but Syracuse was quick to counter. Alexandre Picard swept home an Andy Canzanello feed through the crease just 67 seconds after Stone's tally to even the score at the end of one frame.

The game remained deadlocked at 1-1 until the 18:04 mark of the second period, when Micki DuPont slammed home a shot from the point while manning the power play. The goal was set up by a pretty feed from Rob Schremp, who was playing in his hometown for the first time as a professional.

Wilkes-Barre wasn't done yet, though, as Alain Nasreddine put the Pens up by two goals 51 seconds later. The tally was Nasreddine's second score in just three games this year, after he went 91 straight games without a goal.

Nasreddine upped his point production even further, as he assisted on Tyler Kennedy's first career goal 14 seconds into the third period.

Syracuse tough guy Brandon Sugden was shown the door midway through the third period after punching the Pens' Matt Carkner, and Erik Christensen capitalized on the ensuing power play to stretch the score even further.

A high sticking minor to Andrew Murraey gave the visitors a five-on-three advantage, and helped Maxime Talbot to pick up his first goal of the year at 14:59.

Jeff Deslauriers saw his first start in goal for the Penguins, and turned aside 30 shots to record the victory. Ty Conklin faced 45 Pens attempts in the loss.

NOTES: Pens scratches were Noah Welch, Daniel Carcillo, Dennis Bonvie and Tim Wallace...Christensen and Jonathan Filewich each extended their point streaks to three games. Filewich has recorded multiple points in each of those contests.
