PENS SWEEP WEEKEND SERIES VERSUS RATS

The Albany River Rats were full of bravado after the Penguins posted a 6-3 win at the Pepsi Arena on Friday night, talking about how sweet it would be to travel down to Wilkes-Barre to take two points off their division rivals.

Well, their plan didn't quite work out.

Andrew Penner stopped 20 shots to record his first shutout with the Penguins, as Wilkes-Barre/Scranton posted a 3-0 win against the River Rats Saturday night. The win, coupled with Hershey's shootout loss against Bridgeport, allowed the Pens to climb into first place in the East Division standings.

Penner's victory was a little extra special. The Pens netminder used a pink stick during warmups, that was raffled off during the game to rais money for the fight against breast cancer. His mother, Cindy, has battled the disease.

"It was nice to get the win, and the was just a bonus on a night that meant a lot to me," said Penner. "The boys did a good job defensively, and our PK was real good blocking shots and clearing the zone. It was a whole team effort, once again."

The team's penalty killers stopped all seven Albany advantages, and allowed just one power play goal in 10 attempts during the weekend series. But the biggest kill of them all came during the second period, when Albany skated with a two-man advantage for more than a minute.

"The five-on-three was a huge point in the game," said head coach Todd Richards "It was a big credit to Penner and to our penalty killers, because we put ourselves in some sticky situations in the game, and those guys really stepped up."

"The five-on-three was huge for us, because it got us going," said Maxime Talbot. "We battled, we battled, we had some bad penalties, but we did the job."

Talbot has done the job for three straight games, netting the game-winning goal in each of the Penguins victories to pace the league. Not that either of the last two were pretty.

His tally on Saturday night came when he swept a shot from the goal line that appeared to deflect off an Albany skater and trickle behind goalie Justin Peters. That goal came just 38 seconds into the contest, and proved to be all the offense the Penguins would need.

"Yesterday I said I was lucky, you know, right place at right moment," cmmented Talbot. "But I guess I’m going to these places. That’s how I score my goals, I’m in the right place. I go to the net and just put it on the net. That’s what happened tonight again and it turned out to be the game-winner."

Wilkes-Barre got some insureance from Erik Christensen, whose one-timer off a Ryan Stone feed during an early third period power play gave the Penguins a slightly bigger cushion.

"I said before going out for the third period, our power play has got to really step up for all the hard work that the penalty killers and Penner had done," Richards stated. "Christensen responds, great pass from Stone…that was a huge goal."

Jonathan Filewich closed out the scoring with his third of the season at 15:32 of the third.

The game was the last on home ice for the Penguins until November 5. They will travel to Winnipeg to take on the Manitoba Moose this Thursday and Friday, and take on the Toronto Marlies on Saturday night before returning home.
