Dan Bylsma joins the Penguins this season as the third assistant coach in team history. He was named to his current position on August 24 after serving in the same role with the National Hockey League's New York Islanders last season.

A native of Grand Haven, Michigan, Bylsma?s 12-year professional playing career included 429 NHL games with the Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks.

A right wing during his playing days, Bylsma was selected by the Winnipeg Jets in the sixth round (109th overall) of the 1989 NHL Entry Draft. He made his professional debut with the Greensboro Monarchs (ECHL) in 1992, finishing third on the team with 60 points in 60 games. He also appeared in his first American Hockey League game that season, playing in two games with the Rochester Americans.

Bylsma cracked the NHL with the Kings in 1995-96, and appeared in 220 games with Los Angesle in parts of five seasons. He joined the Ducks prior to the 2000-01 season and was a

 

member of the club that advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2003. He retired from playing following the 2003-04 season with 62 points (19+43) and 184 penalty minutes for his NHL career.

Bylsma served as an assistant coach with the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks in 2004-05 before joining the Islanders? staff the following year.

Prior to turning pro, Bylsma played four seasons at Bowling Green State University (1988-1992), where he recorded 87 points (37+50) in 157 games with the Falcons.

Bylsma appeared in 95 AHL games with Rochester, Albany, Moncton, Springfield, Lowell and Cincinnati during his career, recording 40 points (16+24) and 84 penalty minutes. He also saw action in 231 International Hockey League games with Phoenix and Long Beach, recording 110 points (53+57) and 144 penalty minutes.

The 36 year-old Bylsma is married to Mary Beth and has a son, Bryan (8).
