PHANTOMS CAN'T SCARE UP GOAL AGAINST PENGUINS

Connor James scored 15 seconds into the game, registering the fastest goal in team history as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins posted a 4-0 win against the Philadelphia Phantoms on Wednesday night at the Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza.

The win lowered the Pens' magic number to clinch a playoff spot to four, and inched them closer to first place in the East Division. The Hershey Bears' win against the Springfield Falcons on Wednesday moved them into a tie with the Norfolk Admirals - the Penguins' next opponent - atop the division standings with 96 points.

The opening salvo could have come even earlier, had Tim Wallace's shot not hit the Philadelphia goal post and bounced back out to the slot. Luckily for the Pens, James was there to pick up the loose puck and tap home his ninth of the season in record fashion.

"It’s nice when you do get that first goal. It gives the team some confidence, gives us a little boost," said head coach Todd Richards. "We executed well on the play and Wallace did a good job driving the net, Connor James did a good job following it up."

As it turned out, that was all the offense the team would need, as the Pens skated to their 43rd win of the year.

Jonathan Filewich netted his team-high 26th goal of the season 7:19 into the second period to pad the lead. Filewich now has the fourth-highest single-season goal total in team history.

Stephen Dixon, who picked up an assist on the opening goal, scored twice in a three minute span in the third period to put the game away. He picked up a nifty feed from Dennis Bonvie in front of the Philly net and beat Scott Munroe short side, then was credited with the second after a Phantoms defender put the puck into his own net.

Nolan Schaefer upped his record with the Penguins to 6-1-0 by stopping 17 shots for the shutout.

"It’s not easy when you’re not overly tested. Mentally you have to stay in the game, because you never know when that real test is going to come," Richards said of the low shot total that Schaefer faced. "Defensively we played a good game…I think overall in our own end, and on the defensive side of the puck, we played very well."

NOTES: The previous team record for fastest goal from the start of a game was 17 seconds, set by Jonathan Filewich against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on February 3, 2006.
