The Penguins squandered a two-goal lead in the third
period, then saw the Providence Bruins pull out a
4-3 overtime victory at the Dunkin' Donuts Center
on Sunday.
The OT loss gained the Pens' a point in the standings,
but saw their record fall to 10-3-1-0 on the year.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton opened the scoring just 4:27
into the game. Ryan Stone's dump pass took a wacky
bounce off the glass dividers behind the Bruins' net,
with the puck bouncing driectly to Filewich in front
of the goal. The Pens' right winger swatted home his
sixth of the season to give the visitors the early
lead.
Providence bounced back though, as Nate Thompson
capitalized on a Dennis Bonvie turnover in his own
end, pounding home his second of the season from the
top of the Wilkes-Barre crease.
Christensen put the Pens back in front for good,
picking the corner above Brian Finley's glove hand
during a two-on-one with Filewich less than four minutes
into the second period.
Nasreddine netted his third goal of the campaign
during a second period power play, slipping the puck
just through Finley's pads at 10:17.
Jeremey Reich opened the third by pulling Providence
back within one goal, as he beat Micki DuPont and
buried a Thompson feed to make the score 3-2.
The Bruins tied the score with 8:16 to play. Dwayne
Zinger's shot from the point hopped up on Jeff Deslauriers,
who couldn't control the biscuit. Deslauriers fell
to the ice in an attempt to cover the loose shot,
but Martins Karsums pushed the puck over the goal
line from his stomach to even things a 3-3.
Tom Gilbert was whistled for a hooking call with
3:30 left in the game, giving the Bruins what looked
like a great opportunity to complete the comeback.
But it was the Pens who got the best chance during
the next two minutes, as Connor James just missed
on a shorthanded breakaway 15 seconds into the Providence
advantage.
Karsums netted his second goal of the game on the
only shot of the extra frame to win the game for the
Bruins.
The Penguins completed their three-game New England
swing with a 1-1-1-0 record, and their road mark now
stands at 6-2-1-0 for the season. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton
next plays Wednesday morning in Bridgeport, then travels
to Philadelphia for a Friday night tilt with the Phantoms.
The Pens' next home game is Wednesday, November 22
when they take on the Albany River Rats at 7:05pm.
NOTES: Tyler Kennedy and Rob Schremp
were the Penguins scratches Sunday. Both players required
