Four goal leads don't come around every day in the
AHL.
It's much more rare that they are squandered.
But that's just what happened to the Penguins Saturday
night, as they scored the first four goals of the
game, only to see the Binghamton Senators fight back
to capture a 6-5 win in a shootout.
"We mismanaged the game," said head coach
Todd Richards. "It was a 4-0, 5-1 game, and I
think we probably thought the game was over with."
It looked like the Penguins would run away with the
game, as they jumped out to what appeared to be an
insurmountable lead in a matter of 11:30.
Wilkes-Barre opened its scoring barrage with a Daniel
Carcillo tally less than one minute into the game,
as the Pens forward poked home the rebound off a Ryan
Lannon shot for his sixth goal of the season.
Alexei Mikhnov took a nice feed from Marc-Antoine
Pouliot moments later and found the back of the net
for his second goal of the season at 3:51.
The Senators looked like they were back in the game
when the red light came on at 9:06. A closer look
showed that the puck simply dinged the post and never
crossed the line, keeping the score 2-0.
Jean-Francois Jacqes wased little time in extending
the lead to three goals, as he took a turnaround feed
from Kyle Brodziak on the doorstep and picked up a
goal in the second straight game.
Jonathan Filewich chased Jeff Glass from the net
by swatting a shot out of midair for his ninth goal
of the season, but Bobby Robbins would get one back
for the B-Sens before the break to cut the lead to
three goals after 20 minutes.
"That probably led to our downfall a little
bit, that we were having so much success early on.
Everything we did ended up in their net," said
Richards. "We made plays, we were able to finish.
There were some plays in our own end where we didn’t
execute. But we were able to finish. "
