PENS MOVE TO TOP OF THE LEAGUE WITH WIN

The Penguins got off to the best start in American Hockey League history last season, posting a 20-0-2-1 mark through their first 23 games.

Saturday night's game against the Binghamton Senators was the 23rd of this year for the Penguins. And although their record is slightly worse this season at just 17-4-1-1, one thing remains the same.

The Penguins once again have the best record in the AHL.

Kyle Brodziak's goal with 30 seconds to play proved to be the difference, as Wilkes-Barre/Scranton pulled out a hard-fought 2-1 win against the Senators.

"That's two games in a row now they've played us tough," head coach Todd Richards said of the Senators, who recorded a win after trailing the Penguins by four goals just one week ago. "But we stuck with it. We kept battling, battling. Finally we got a fortuitous bounce and [Brodziak] put himself in the right place at the right time."

Brodziak, who had been without a goal since scoring in Manitoba on October 27, picked up a rebound in front of the Binghamton net with less than a minute to play and tapped home his fifth of the season for the win.

"It's a great feeling, especially in the last minute," Brodziak said. "The last month has been a little...it's been a difficult month for me, so it just feels good. It's good to get the win, and I feel like I contributed tonight."

Brozdiak's goal came late enough in the third, but Daniel Carcillo's tally, which tied the game at 1-1, came with a single tick left on the clock in the second period.

"It was a huge goal. It was a 1-0 game at the time," said Richards. "I think they had momentum, they were generating offense, and we weren't able to create a lot."

But Kurtis McLean chipped a faceoff toward Binghamton goalkeeper Jeff Glass, and Carcillo deflected the puck into the net for his eighth goal of the season.

Goaltender Jeff Deslauriers was excellent in picking up his 10th victory of the season - his sixth win in a row.

The Penguins are now off until next Friday, when they will travel to Hamilton to face the North Division Bulldogs. The team returns home the following night to take on the Chicago Wolves, who feature the top three scorers in the AHL.
