Filewich picked up his second shorty
off a three-on-two, placing a Brodziak pass behind Caron
at 4:40 of the second frame.
That physicality played a large part in the first period,
as the Penguins limited the Admirals to just seven shots
on goal, despite the visitors receiving four power play
opportunities.
At least one of those man advantages played right into
the Pens’ hands. Kyle Brodziak tracked down a
clear behind the Norfolk net, and battled with a pair
of Admirals defenders to grab control of the puck. He
then dished a pass to Filewich in front, who calmly
backhanded a shot behind former Penguin Sebastien Caron
4:23 into the game.
“They had three guys deep there, and the two
forwards were up high, so I just kind of stayed in the
slot,” said Filewich. “I anticipated [Brodziak]
getting the puck…I just stood there and luckily
it bounced out.”
Matt Carkner extended the lead less than three minutes
later, slapping a shot that tipped off Caron’s
glove and found the net.
“It was just great vision and playmaking by [Brodziak],”
Filewich said.
The Admirals countered with a shorthanded tally of
their own, as Brandon Bochenski picked up his team-leading
22nd goal of the season midway through the third period
to make the score 3-1.
But Tyler Kennedy sealed the victory with a late score
to cap the night.
The Penguins will be off for the next two days, before
returning to action Tuesday night against the Philadelphia
Phantoms at home.
NOTES: The Penguins previously scored
two shorthanded goals in a game on Jan. 18, 2005 at
Manitoba and November 13, 2005 at Hartford. They also
accomplished the feat in Game One of the East Division
Finals against the Hershey Bears last spring.
