SHOTS GALORE IN SYRACUSE

The Penguins managed to slip just two of 57 shots by Tomas Popperle in 65 minutes Friday night.

They then potted three pucks behind the Syracuse netminder in four attempts during the shootout round to record a 3-2 win against the Crunch at the Onondaga War Memorial at OnCenter.

The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Penguins – the first time the club had lost back-to-back contests in regulation since Feb. 26 and March 3.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton set a new team record for shots in a game Friday, bettering the old Pens’ mark of 53, which was accomplished on Nov. 18, 2000 against the Albany River Rats.

The 57-shot effort also did away with the old road record of 50 shots, set on Feb. 2, 2001 in Syracuse.

Geoff Platt opened the scoring late in the first period to give the home club the lead – a lead which held for nearly a full period.

A great individual effort from Alexei Mikhnov led to the Pens’ first tally of the game, as he stole the puck off a defender then broke in alone on Popperle, grabbing his fourth goal of the season in the process.

It looked like the teams would go to the third tied at 1-1, especially when Darcy Verot took a slashing penalty with less than two minutes to play in the second. But a misplay in the neutral zone led to a three-on-one for the Crunch, and Joe Motzko picked up his third shorthanded tally of the year.

The Penguins power play continued to falter through its first eight tries on the night, but number nine proved to be the turning point as Syracuse native Rob Schremp scored in front of family and friends with less than 10 minutes to play to force overtime.

Schremp’s shot on the power play was the only one of 24 attempts in the third period to beat Popperle.

A scoreless extra frame gave way to the shootout round, where Schremp, Tyler Kennedy and Mikhnov all scored on the Penguins first three tries. Andrew Penner allowed two goals in five attempts by his former team to record his 12th victory of the season.
