OILERS RECALL NILSSON FROM PENGUINS

 

The Edmonton Oilers have recalled forward Robert Nilsson fromt the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, it was announced on Wednesday.

Nilsson was acquired by the Oilers from the New York Islanders, along with Ryan O’Mara and a first round choice in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, for Ryan Smyth on February 27. He was subsequently assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, where he recorded 10 points (1+9) in seven games with the Penguins.

Currently in his second pro season, Nilsson was leading the Bridgeport Sound Tigers (AHL) in scoring with 45 points (12+33) through 50 games at the time of the trade. He led the Islanders affiliate in assists and was fifth in goals.

Nilsson has combined for 55 points (13+42) in 57 games with the Sound Tigers and Penguins this season, and is fifth in the AHL in assists.

The 5’11”, 185 pound forward made his professional debut in 2005-06, splitting the season between the Islanders and Bridgeport. He scored 20 points (6+14) with 26 PIM in 53 games with New York in his NHL rookie season, and 28 points (8+20) in 29 games with Bridgeport.

The 22-year-old played three seasons in Europe with Lkesands, Hammarby and Djurgardens IF in Sweden, and Fribourg-Gotteronn of Switzerland. He was selected with the 15th overall pick in the 2003 Entry Draft by the Islanders.
