PITTSBURGH SIGNS TAFFE & CURRY

 

The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed center Jeff Taffe and goaltender John Curry, it was announced by Penguins Executive Vice President and General Manager Ray Shero.

Taffe, 26, split the 2006-07 season between the Phoenix Coyotes (NHL) and the San Antonio Rampage (AHL). He recorded six points (4+2) and two penalty minutes in 17 games with the Coyotes, and notched 40 points (20+20) and 22 penalty minutes in 59 games with the Rampage. He ranked fourth on San Antonio in points and third in goals.

A former first round draft choice by the St. Louis Blues (30th overall in the 2000), Taffe has appeared in 100 NHL contests with the Phoenix Coyotes and New York Rangers, recording 28 points (15+13) and 26 penalty minutes.

The 6-3,215 pound native of Hastings, MN has appeared in 227 AHL contests, registering 157 points (73+84) and 183 penalty minutes with Springfield, Utah, Hartford and San Antonio.

Taffe played three seasons with the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers, recording 113 points (56+57) and 164 penalty minutes in 120 games. He finished second on the team with 58 points and first with 34 goals in 2001-02, helping the Gophers to the NCAA title.

Curry, 23, was named the Boston University Terriers most valuable player for the third consecutive season after posting a 17-10-8 record with a 2.01 goals against average and an NCAA-high seven shutouts. His GAA ranked fourth in the nation while his .928 save percentage were sixth.

The Hobey Baker Finalist was also named to the RBK All-America First Team and was the Hockey East Player of the Year. Additionally, the 5-11, 183 pound native of Shorewood, MN was named New England's Most Valuable Player by the New England Hockey Writers Association.

In four seasons with the Terriers, Curry posted a 59-29-8 record with a 2.07 goals against average, a .923 save percentage and 13 shutouts. His career goals against average and save percentages are the best in school history, while his shutout total tied the team record.
