PENS BACK ON TOP IN AHL EAST
Penguins Weekly: November 27, 2006

Facing a daunting stretch of four games in five nights, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (15-3-1-1, 32 points) made the best of a tricky situation, picking up seven of a possible eight points to move into first place in the East Division.

After playing their previous five contests on the road, the Penguins returned home last Wednesday to face the Albany River Rats. Six different players scored in the 6-0 victory over the Rats, including Alexei Mikhnov, who recorded his first AHL goal. Jeff Deslauriers turned aside 17 shots in the victory to pick up his first AHL shutout and eighth win on the season.

The Penguins hosted the Norfolk Admirals in another East Division battle on Friday night, and posted a 4-2 victory over the division leaders. Deslauriers was sharp again, making 22 saves. Jean-Francois Jacques netted his first goal with the Penguins and added an assist in the contest.

After suffering a shootout loss in Binghamton on Saturday, the Penguins traveled to the Giant Center to take on the Hershey Bears on Sunday afternoon. Marc-Antoine Pouliot tied the

game with 1:45 remaining in the contest and then netted two goals in the shootout to lead the Pens to a 4-3 victory over the Bears.

With that win, the Penguins took sole possession of first place in the AHL’s East Division, holding a one point advantage over the Norfolk Admirals. Their 32 points are also tops in the Eastern Conference and second in the league, trailing the Rochester Americans by one point.

The Pens play host to the Syracuse Crunch on Wednesday evening at 7:05pm. The first 5,000 fans will receive a 2006 East Division Championship License Plate courtesy of the Citizens’ Voice and the Scranton Times-Tribune.

The Hershey Bears come calling on Friday night for a 7:05pm rematch between the clubs. The first 2,500 fans aged 14 or under can look forward to a Penguins Mr. Potato Head, sponsored by Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania/Highmark Blue Shield. The Penguins will wrap up their weekend Saturday night in Binghamton, taking on the Senators at 7:05pm.
